Energy • Ability • Desire

Red and white Chinese seal stamp featuring stylized characters in a square layout. The lines are bold and the design appears symmetrical and abstract. , by Beth Weintraub
The word Energy was hard to convey to the weathered man under a bridge in Kowloon. He seemed to understand, helped me choose a beautifully carved Chop with a tortoise and a fish swirling at the top. He had hundreds on show, that he’d carved and inserted into perfectly made fitted boxes in all different colors, his table and workbench was among dozens of others, all carving in the same tradition. An ancient market for making an ancient mark. When I returned, he tried to explain that he’d used an expression for meaning energy, made up of two words. It was 1991, how could I know what it possibly said? I’ve used that mood seal on many hundreds of my artworks, and now on my ceramics. What does it say, you’re wondering? An image search for the words came back as ability and desire. I never knew, but that is what makes up energy in one’s self, right?
